Abert Lake is Oregon’s only saltwater lake. And though it’s a desolate place, it’s also a popular stopover for migratory waterfowl. Located near Valley Falls in south-central Oregon, the Chewaucan River flows into Abert Lake, but no water flows out. Thus minerals are allowed to concentrate in the water. The water is very salty but supports a population of brine shrimp.
