Mention Palm Oasis and most people think of exotic locations such as the Sahara. However, the BLM has many palm oasis in southern California. Here, the California fan palm grows in springs and seeps within some of the hottest, driest deserts in North America. Fan palms are the only palm native to the western U. S. and the largest palm in the U. S. They can grow over 80 ft. tall.
Fan palms provide a habitat for Desert Bighorn Sheep and the California endemic Peninsular Bighorn Sheep . Hooded Orioles rely on the trees for food and places to build nests. Both Hooded Orioles and coyotes play an integral part in seed distribution. The Palm Springs area offers several locations to visit Palm Oasis, including the Coachella Valley Preserve, and the Art Smith Trail in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.
