Get to Know Your New National Monument: San Juan Islands National Monument in Washington
The recreational opportunities in the San Juan Islands attract visitors who come to watch wildlife, fish, hunt, hike, and camp on BLM-administered lands, home to some of the region’s most scientifically interesting land and dramatic diversity of habitats.
The lands offer rich educational and scientific prospects. Some BLM-managed lands are used by outdoor and environmental education programs, including classes designed to help school children gain first-hand experience in a marine environment. Scientists working on the islands have made numerous discoveries, including unique fossil finds and other evidence of long-vanished species.
