The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (Glamis) is the largest mass of sand dunes in California offering a variety of recreational opportunities.
Managed by BLM-California, Glamis was formed by windblown sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla; the dune system extends for more than 40 miles in a band averaging five miles wide. Dunes often reach heights of 300 feet above the desert floor, providing outstanding opportunities for recreation. A favorite location among off-highway vehicle enthusiasts, the area provides a variety of challenges for all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, dune buggies, 4x4s, recreational off-highway vehicles, and more. The dunes also offer amazing scenery, opportunities for solitude, and a home to rare plants and animals.
