On this day in history in 1946, President Truman’s Reorganization Plan 3 went into effect, which among other things created the Bureau of Land Management from the General Land Office and the Grazing Service.
What other significant management responsibility ultimately came to the BLM as a result of this reorganization?
Reorganization Plan 3 not only created the BLM but it also gave the Department of the Interior all of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s mineral deposits, setting the stage for the BLM’s management of what is now around 700 million acres of Federal mineral estate.
