On today’s Bucket List, we hike the Salt Lick Trail in the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming.
The Salt Lick Trail can be found along U.S. Hwy. 16 in Tensleep Canyon, approximately six miles east of Ten Sleep, Wyoming. The trail winds up the northern wall of the canyon as it skirts massive cliffs of limestone to take hikers to the canyon rim. Once out of the canyon, hikers enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding Bighorn Basin and Bighorn and Absaroka mountain ranges from an elevation of 5,700 feet. The trail continues northeast along flats and through forests lined with the deep side canyons of the Bighorn Mountains. The trail then changes direction to the south for views of Salt Lick Creek and to complete the loop back to the trailhead.
